How Regulation serves Registered Massage Therapy patients:

The Public can have confidence that only individuals Registered with The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) – Regulated trained healthcare professionals – can use the protected title 'RMT' or 'Massage Therapist' and hold themselves out to be a 'Registered Massage Therapist' (RMT).

The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario
is one of 26 health regulatory colleges created by the Ontario Government. Not to be confused with educational facilities that train health professionals, health Regulatory Colleges help protect the Public’s right to safe, effective and ethical care.

Through legislation and regulations, and standards and policies set by the Colleges, Regulated healthcare professionals are accountable to their Regulatory College for the healthcare services they provide.

RMT Registration

CMTO is responsible for ensuring that anyone wishing to become a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) has met the educational requirements and standards of qualification to become Registered and practise 'Massage Therapy' in Ontario. CMTO handles initial registration and annual registration renewal.

Quality Assurance

CMTO has a Quality Assurance Program in place to help promote continuing competence and improvement among Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) and address changes in practice environments. CMTO also develops Standards of Practice that outline certain requirements all Registered Massage Therapists must meet in practice.

As a child in 1954, Barbara contracted polio. Registered massage therapy helps her deal with the many ramifications of that disease that continue to affect her to this day. She started massage therapy in the hospital as a child as part of her polio treatment, and continued with massage therapy at home for muscle activation. She found positive results from massage therapy again when she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in her fifties. She recommends that anyone seeking massage therapy treatment do their research in advance to make themselves feel more comfortable.

Diane, 87, and her husband, 94, both find massage therapy essential in keeping up their energy levels and maintaining their mobility and independence as they age. Elaine visited a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) after an unsuccessful carpal tunnel surgery in hopes of some pain relief. She started massage therapy before her repeat surgery on her right hand, and continued after she had the same surgery on her left hand. She feels that massage therapy was instrumental in helping her recover from those surgeries and successfully return to work, and has seen great benefit from massage therapy over the years. She believes that massage therapy is an essential part of health care, and that people should consider visiting an RMT. “The benefit that massage therapy provides, improves the quality of life for many people.”
